A quick checklist for home plumbing
A slow drip in a sink may not seem like much, but over a year that can add up to hundreds of gallons and a bigger water bill every month. The pros at Perfect Plumbing, a plumber in Annapolis, offer some tips for keeping those water lines in good shape.
1) Check for leaks.
“Water leaks are going to be noticeable. Water will pool on the ground or the floor will be damp,” said Steven Gordon, a representative of Blulo the company which handles marketing for Perfect Plumbing. “While water on the ground is not an issue, water in the house is. Long term water damage can destroy walls and floors.”
Mildew is an excellent indicator of moisture where there should be none.
2) Test the water pressure.
Water pressure, especially in municipal systems, can vary some. But of the water pressure gradually gets less and less and stays that way over time, there’s a plumbing problem, said the Annapolis plumbing experts.
If the pressure varies in from place to place in the house, then the clog is not in a main line. Shower heads and faucets can get packed with debris.
If drains are running slow, it’s pretty much a guarantee that the culprit is a logged line.
3) Every few years, drain the water heater to remove sediment build up.
In addition to clogging the heater, the sediment may keep the water heater from operating efficiently, Mr. Gordon said. Most water heaters come with a valve to attach to a garden hose to make draining easier.
4) Get professional help if it’s too much.
“Replacing a water line may be a job a homeowner doesn’t want to handle. A clogged drain line may be clogged past the point a homeowner can reach. If there’s any doubt, call for help. It’s better to have a expert fix the first problem than to try a do-it-yourself fix and create even more problems,” Mr. Gordon said.
